An M4V file is an iTunes/Apple TV video: movies, TV shows, and music videos sold or rented through Apple's store. Non-DRM M4V files open in VLC, Windows Media Player, or QuickTime. DRM-protected purchases only play in the Apple TV app (Windows/Mac) or QuickTime (Mac), signed in with the Apple ID used to buy them.

Why does a file show audio but no picture (or not play at all)?
