What is a .MOV file?

A MOV file is an Apple QuickTime movie, the default format for video recorded on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. On a Mac, double-click it to play in QuickTime Player. On Windows 10/11, the built-in Media Player opens most MOV files; for anything it refuses, use the free VLC media player. To share a MOV where MP4 is required, convert it with HandBrake or VLC. The two formats share the same structure, so it is usually fast and lossless.

Why does a file show audio but no picture (or not play at all)?
A container like MP4, MOV or MKV can hold many codecs. If your browser lacks the codec inside (for example H.265 or AC-3 audio), the player tells you and offers the Media Converter, which can turn it into a format that plays everywhere.
Can I play AVI, WMV, FLV or MKV files?
