What is a .XPS file?
Everything worth knowing about XML Paper Specification Document files.
An XPS file is Microsoft's fixed-layout document format, created by the "Microsoft XPS Document Writer" virtual printer on Windows. On Windows 10 and 11 it no longer opens by default, so add the free XPS Viewer (Settings > Apps > Optional features > "XPS Viewer"). The most common goal is converting XPS to PDF, which you can do for free using XPS Viewer and "Microsoft Print to PDF".

Is my .XPS file uploaded?
No. Your .XPS file is opened and rendered for you. The first time, a small open-source rendering component is downloaded and then cached.
Why does the first file take a moment?
The first time, your browser downloads the rendering component. After that it's cached, and new .XPS files open in a second or two.
Why are some images shown as grey boxes?
Some .XPS files embed image types the browser can't draw (such as TIFF or JPEG XR). Text, vector graphics and standard PNG and JPEG images are shown normally.
Can I search inside my .XPS file?
Yes, when your .XPS file includes a text layer. Files that are pure scans or drawings without embedded text can't be searched.
Can I convert my .XPS file to PDF?
Not yet in this viewer. You can save any page as an image. A .XPS to PDF converter is on our roadmap.
